Challenges
With an old IBM z/VM VSE mainframe about to reach its end of life, Arsoe de Bretagne was faced to the renewal of its system that has proven reliability over the years. At the same time, new services and increasing traceability regulatory requirements raise the volumes data and transaction to be processed. Arsoe de Bretagne consequently needed to use a more open and higher performing operating system while leveraging existing investments in data and applications coded in COBOL 74 and COBOL 85.
Automated migration was the fastest and viable solution allowing for extending the life and reach of existing applications and higher quality of service, the introduction of more efficient and cost-effective technologies, and ensuring producers with a transparent continuity of service.
"The 100% automated migration provided by MetaWare will enable to secure the migration and meet our deadlines. It was also more cost-effective and viable rather than rewriting which the estimates were more lengthy and expensive," Mireille Cadou said.
IBM z/OS (fka. MVS), IBM i (fka. AS/400), and AIX platforms were evaluated to become new platform of choice. Unix was more cost-effective due to the multiple competitive offerings available on the market and IBM AIX platform and Oracle Database were selected as they match both budget and performance requirements.

The IBM (AIX and Oracle) technological platform now hosts all the data and applications from Arsoe de Bretagne. The migration solution was rapidly considered as the sole possible solution.
Moreover, to migrate to a UNIX information system and to integrate a job scheduler has enabled to considerably improve the collection and interactive provision of all bovine species reference data for the 80 000 users.
The interactive services are now operating 24 hours a day and all week long with waiting and processing time strongly reduced.
"The migration and the job scheduler integration to our information system has allowed us to reduce our operating costs up to 15%. The price of open system equipment is lower. We were able to offer new services to our subscribers, such as an infocentre providing them with statistics. The processing time of our batch files has been reduced and our interactive services are now available for longer periods of time. » said Mireille Cadou.
